Signings, Drafts & Realigning the Coils

Yellowknife (CP) We’re just four days into the new NHL free agent period and YDP has seen many of their current players sign NHL contracts for the upcoming 2007-08 season. ‘I know the percentage of prospects that make the big league is extremely small,’ said GM Wong, ‘so any signings is a cause for celebration for our scouting department.’ The following Penetrators have recently signed with NHL clubs.

July 4 – Fedotenko – Islanders – 1 year - $2.9 million
July 3 – Labarbera – Kings – 2 years - $800,850
July 3 – Rachunek – Devils – 1 year - $1.4 million
July 3 – Lukowich – Lightnings – 3 years – undisclosed
July 3 – Garon – Oilers – 2 years – undisclosed
July 2 – Sykora – Penguins – 2 years – $5 million
July 1 – Hannan – Avalanche – 4 years - $18 million
July 1 – Ouellet – Lightnings – 2 years – $2.5 million

In the dispersal draft, YDP was extremely surprised that their short submission to the league office netted them an asset. Radek Smolenak of the Tampa Bay organization was acquired from the defunct Defiance with the 21st pick in the disperal draft. Smolenak was the Lightnings’ second choice in the 2005 draft. He split his time in 2006-07 between TB’s AHL and ECHL affiliates.

Like many GMs across the league YDP waited in anticipation for the Mind Melds announcement for the expansion draft. After the initial list was made public, reporters across the league were stunned at the selection. Khoo made his millions in the engineering business, so for him to miscalculate anything was rare. A source close to the Mind Melds’ war room claimed that old data was used in their initial selection process and that outside consultants were brought in to ‘realign the coils.’

While the pickings were slim, Khoo was able to make 12 selections today. ‘I knew the pool would thin, but was happy with who was made available,’ said Khoo. Unconfirmed reports have claimed that YDP has lost JS Aubin in the expansion draft. Aubin was brought in as a backup but stole the show during their quarterfinals appearance against the Rovers. Aubin posted a 3-1 record and was a pivotal part down the stretch helping YDP claimed their first division title.

How much is Vic paying you to be an 'outside consultant'?

I think we've seen a RHL blosphere first... a GM quoted in a release on another team's blog!

How do you put a price on saving a franchise from a poor start? It wasn't all me, like the good student he accepted some of my advice but did put his stamp on the team. You've heard of the Walsh tree, just imagine how big the Bourdeau tree is getting :)

Howard, nice to know my assumption that you'd be helping out the new guy was right. :)

For the lineage, you'll have to go back a few generations before CB to find the true source of all this madness that has resulted in us spending a large proportion of our free time it seems, on fantasy hockey. Check my latest post. :)

Jun, thank you. I commented on your blog, just one minor request. If you're doing the lineage chart, Kos and Victor would be siblings :)

Brothers among thieves, isn't that what they say? :) Okay, I think for the balance in the league, we need to go outside Alberta for the next owner, if there is one...
